U.S.: Iran will help Syria to crush rebellion
Iran helps in secret Syrian president, Bashar al-Assad to crack down on the democracy movement that in recent weeks has recently emerged in the form of demonstrations in several Syrian cities.
- We believe that Iran assists the Syrian government with equipment in its efforts to suppress his own people, says a U.S. government official told the Wall Street Journal.
Technological assistance
U.S. officials say they have intelligence that shows that the regime in Tehran has supplied equipment to Syria that could be used by security forces during demonstrations.
Moreover, the Iranians helped with technology that the Syrian regime can use to block and monitor protesters' use of Internet and mobile phones.
Wall Street Journal's sources believe that Iran's support for President Assad reflects the Iranian concern about losing an important ally in the region and military partner of Israel.
Some U.S. officials express surprise that Iran any more likely to have helped Assad, but believes that there may be more assistance on the way, if protests gaining strength.
Green Revolution
Iran further shares out of the experience, the country itself has made the Green Movement, the opposition movement in 2009 flowed into the Iranian streets to protest against the disputed re-election of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.
- The Syrians do not want to see a green revolution in their country, says a source in the Pentagon.
- And the Iranians are ready to help, he added.
